Friday: Texas test

December 14, 2012

How would you spend your time if you lived in Texas?

If I lived in Texas, I would attend football games on Friday nights, eat Tex-Mex food, and visit places like NASA and the Alamo, where Davy Crockett died in battle.  I would go to Amarillo and see the Cadillac Ranch, where eccentric Texan Stanley Marsh 3 has buried ten cars in the ground.

Where would you want to live if you were to move to Texas?
If I were to move to Texas, I would want to live in Austin, because it is a young, vibrant city with a lot of Fortune 500 companies. Businesses like Dell have their headquarters there.
I would want to live in Houston because I am interested in the Space Program. I would go visit Mission Control Center for fun. I would support the Houston Astros, the professional baseball team.
I would want to live in Dallas, because that is where the famous TV series was based. It is a mecca for shopping and dining. I would be a fan of the Dallas Mavericks, the professional basketball team.
I would want to live in San Antonio because I love basketball, and the San Antonio Spurs have won the National Basketball Championships four times. They are a strong team. I also love the arts and there are 25 art museums there.

Can you explain Texas cities’ sizes?
The cities are ranked in order of population like this: Houston, San Antonio, Dallas and Austin.
Houston
San Antonio
Dallas
Austin
2.1 million people
1.3 million people
1.2 million people
820,000 people

Houston is the biggest city; Austin is the smallest.
San Antonio is larger than Austin, but smaller than Houston.
San Antonio falls between Houston and Austin in size.
Dallas is slightly smaller than San Antonio.
Houston is about two and a half times the size of Austin, population-wise.
Paris has 2.2 million people, so it is similar in size to Houston.

Oral Reports: “Texas”
Please choose a topic related to Texas for your oral report. Be creative! Teach us something useful about your subject. Please don’t simply read to us. There should be some form of visual support (computer presentation, poster, etc.) Check your USB key in advance to be sure your software works at school.
Suggestions:
  • ·         One of the major cities (Dallas, Houston, Austin or San Antonio)
  • ·         A lesser-known city or town like College Station, Lubbock, LaGrange, Cut n Shoot, etc.
  • ·         A person such as one of the former presidents from Texas (George Bush senior, George W Bush, Lyndon Johnson), a famous actor or singer, or a person in history like Davy Crockett
  • ·         A food that comes from Texas (Old El Paso Mexican food, Lays Potato Chips)
  • ·         A product that comes from Texas (Texas Instruments)
  • ·         A sports team (Dallas Cowboys, San Antonio Spurs)
  • ·         A famous athlete
Reports must be about three minutes (not much more, please!) and you will be graded on the following:
  • ·         Content
  • ·         Grammar
  • ·         Pronunciation
  • ·         Knowledge about the subject matter
  • ·         Presentation (time and attention given to what you present)
Additional information:
·         If you have questions about pronunciation, don’t hesitate to ask me or you can check www.dictionary.com and click on the speaker symbol.
·         Please give me a small sheet of paper with your name, class and topic as soon as possible.
·         Reports will begin the week of Monday, October 1. Volunteers may go first; otherwise, we will go in alphabetical order.
